Cairo, the administrative capital of Egypt, has kept much of its ancient treasures for many centuries. Once Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Lagos experienced a boom, which swelled the city’s population and today, Lagos is one of the world’s fastest growing cities with a full and complex tapestry of religious and ethnic groups.

The sprawling city is chaotic, crowded and lacks any major tourism infrastructure. Most visitors come here for business and there are few sights in the tourist sense. Streets are congested, drivers are maniacal and blackouts are common. However, the convoluted history of the city, and Nigeria as a whole, contributes to its exotic flavor. Lagos has an interesting National Museum, National Theatre, several markets and some decent beaches to explore.

The National Museum is very popular because of its collections of rare Nigerian arts and carvings. Some of these carvings date back to the pre-historic period and have been often researched as a part of African studies. The museum’s most prized possessions are the terra-cotta and bronze creations and ivory-bronze sculptures. Many of the artifacts here were produced during the reign of the Benin kings. The museum arranges special trips to artistic exhibits like the ‘Treasures of Ancient Nigeria’ and the ‘Legacy of Two Thousand Years.’
